Invisalign Q & A

by Lee A. Ecker, DDS

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign® clear aligner treatment is an orthodontic system created to address crowding issues, crooked teeth, and/or gaps. Throughout the procedure, the individual wears a set of removable, transparent aligners which gradually shift the teeth into the proper position over time. This can help to restore the aesthetic appeal of an individual’s smile in addition to helping with the function of the person’s bite. When patients are consistent with the Invisalign® process’s instructions, the results are known to be exceptional.

What are the Benefits of Invisalign® Aligners?

Invisalign® aligners can offer the desired outcome as effectively as conventional, metal braces while providing patients with several unique benefits including:

  • Virtually Undetectable- clear aligners are practically invisible when worn throughout treatment. This can assist people to feel more confident during the entire straightening process.
  • Convenience- The visits to the orthodontist for ordering and following up on Invisalign® aligner treatment do not take as long and clear aligners don’t need to be adjusted or tightened.
  • Comfortable- The smooth, BPA-free medical-grade plastic is very gentle on an individual’s mouth and doesn't cause the cheeks or gums to become irritated and painful.
  • Removable- The Invisalign® aligners can be removed when the person needs to floss and brush teeth, eat, or drink. The patient can continue to eat several types of foods and maintain optimal dental hygiene habits.

How Do Invisalign® Aligners Work?

The dentist will use 3D imaging to design a treatment program and the aligners will be fabricated using the measurements. The aligners “snap” onto teeth and adjust them slowly. The aligners should only be taken out to floss and brush teeth, drink, or eat. A new set of aligners will be used every 14 days. Patients should come into the office for checkups regularly to ensure that the teeth are moving correctly. For the best results, the Invisalign® aligners must be worn for 20 to 22 hours each day. In some cases, retainers are used afterward to make sure that the teeth stay in the correct place.
